Yunomi is a traditional Japanese teacup, most often used for non-powdered, loose-leaf green tea, and it is suited to the style of Senchado. Unlike the wide, open shape of a matcha chawan, the yunomi has a taller form that's practical for daily use. Yunomi is a cup that's been part of everyday tea drinking in Japan for generations.
This "Glacier" Yunomi has a striking contrast between its glossy, cool-toned interior and its darker, textured exterior. The inside is glazed in deep turquoise, like the color of a glacier, and the surface is smooth, bright, and reflective. It creates a vivid backdrop for the color of the tea, especially with lighter Japanese tea like Sencha.
The outside has more weight to it. The blue glaze at the top flows into a soft, mossy green, which then gives way to a rough, dark volcanic texture with a rough, stony feel. The transition is gradual but distinct, like layers in a landscape. The textured lower half gives the cup a solid, grounded feel.
The form is classic yunomi, made for daily tea. It holds a good amount without feeling oversized, and the slightly flared rim makes sipping easy.
